Wildfire Report — National Overview

The U.S. remains at Preparedness Level 5. Initial attack activity across the country is light, with 140 new fires reported nationwide yesterday. Firefighters are currently working to manage 87 uncontained large fires, with 7 new large incidents emerging, 7 large fires contained, and 21,268 total personnel assigned to incidents nationwide. So far in 2026, firefighters have responded to 52,466 wildfires that have burned 8,262,025 acres across the United States.

An international contingent from Australia and New Zealand — two 15-member incident management teams and 212 fireline personnel — remains assigned to support large fires in the Northwest and Great Basin geographic areas. Two hundred forty soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division based out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) remain deployed in support of wildland fire operations on the Little Giant fire, supported by an assigned Incident Management Organization (IMO). Two MAFFS C-130 airtankers from the 302nd Airlift Wing (Air Force Reserve, CO) and one from the 152nd Airlift Wing (NV Air National Guard) are deployed to Santa Maria, CA, while two MAFFS C-130 airtankers and support personnel from the 146th Airlift Wing (CA Air National Guard) are deployed to Redding, CA.

Hot temperatures will continue across the Plains today with highs near 100°F amid minimum relative humidity of 15% to 25% and locally breezy south winds gusting to 20–25 mph. Tropical Storm Edouard will make landfall near the mouth of the Sabine River this evening, bringing locally heavy rain to southeast Texas and far southwest Louisiana along with gusty winds. Scattered to widespread thunderstorms will develop across much of Florida, while a cold front moves through the Lower Great Lakes and Northeast with showers and thunderstorms. In the West, breezy and dry southwest winds will develop in much of western and southern Nevada into far northeast California and southeast Oregon, creating elevated conditions as minimum relative humidity falls to 7% to 15%. Farther east, scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop from far northeast Oregon to central Idaho and southwest Montana, extending southward into the central Rockies, while isolated thunderstorms develop in the Southwest. Much cooler temperatures are expected west of the Cascades and Sierra today due to strong onshore flow.
