Judge Orders White House to Restore CNN, MS NOW, and Politico Access — Litigation Continues
U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly issued a temporary restraining order in the early morning hours Thursday, directing the Trump administration to restore White House press credentials to CNN, MS NOW, and Politico within hours.
Kelly, a Trump appointee, found the credential revocations were done without "constitutionally adequate due process" and wrote that the record was "bereft of any formally articulated standards" governing the ban.
Despite the court order, some journalists from all three outlets were initially turned away at the gate Thursday morning before gaining access by midday. The judge's order keeps the credentials active for 14 days while the full legal challenge proceeds.
The White House also barred CNN and MS NOW reporters from the state dinner for Xi Jinping on Thursday evening, a separate access dispute not covered by the TRO.
Attorney Ted Boutrous called the ruling "a strong victory vindicating freedom of the press, due process and the rule of law."
