Wildfire Report — National Overview
The U.S. remains at Preparedness Level 5. Initial attack activity across the country is light, with 108 new fires reported nationwide yesterday. Firefighters are currently working to manage 93 uncontained large fires, with 4 new large incidents emerging, 4 large fires contained, and 22,434 total personnel assigned to incidents nationwide. So far in 2026, firefighters have responded to 52,253 wildfires that have burned 8,238,284 acres across the United States.
An international contingent from Australia and New Zealand — two 15-member incident management teams and 212 fireline personnel — remains assigned to support large fires in the Northwest and Great Basin geographic areas. Two hundred forty soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division based out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) remain deployed in support of wildland fire operations on the Little Giant fire, supported by an assigned Incident Management Organization (IMO). Two MAFFS C-130 airtankers from the 302nd Airlift Wing (Air Force Reserve, CO) and one from the 152nd Airlift Wing (NV Air National Guard) are deployed to Santa Maria, CA, while two MAFFS C-130 airtankers and support personnel from the 146th Airlift Wing (CA Air National Guard) are deployed to Redding, CA. On August 30, a federal wildlife officer with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was fatally injured while assisting with evacuations on the Railroad South Fire in Oklahoma.
Breezy southerly winds persist across much of the central and southern Plains, especially central and western Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle, where gusts up to 35 mph will create elevated to locally critical conditions amid very hot temperatures and low relative humidity. Locally breezy winds and low relative humidity (10% to 20%) will create elevated conditions across parts of the northern Great Basin into northeast California and southeastern Oregon. Strong westerly winds will push into the northern Plains with occasional gusts exceeding 40 mph across parts of eastern Montana into North Dakota. A more robust monsoon moisture plume into Arizona and western New Mexico extends into much of the northern and eastern Great Basin, Four Corners, and West Slope, resulting in scattered to numerous mixed wet and dry thunderstorms. Isolated to scattered mixed wet and dry thunderstorms are forecast east of the Divide in Colorado and southern Wyoming extending into the central Plains, while thunderstorms develop over central and south Texas and become more numerous along the Gulf Coast, Florida, and the southeast Atlantic coast.
Washington
The Northwest Area is operating at Preparedness Level 4, coordinating 25 uncontained large fires across the region.
The Sinlahekin fire near Tonasket spans 166,413 acres (40% contained) with minimal smoldering under CIMT Southwest Team 3. The Little Giant fire in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest northwest of Leavenworth stands at 163,089 acres (49% contained) with moderate backing and flanking under CIMT California Team 5, which is also managing the Sisi fire (1,794 acres; 0% contained; active torching, flanking, and backing).
The Kaiser Canyon fire south of Nespelem covers 138,293 acres (98% contained) with minimal smoldering. The Three Queens fire east of Snoqualmie Pass stands at 8,742 acres (5% contained) with flanking, creeping, and isolated torching under CIMT Northern Rockies Team 2, which is also managing the King fire (2,326 acres; 0% contained), Goat fire (707 acres; 0% contained), Wonderland Complex (373 acres; 0% contained), and Grand Park 2 fire (168 acres; 88% contained). Additional active incidents across Washington include Ptarmigan (25,166 acres; 55% contained), Border 2 (7,633 acres; 73% contained), Luna (5,470 acres; 27% contained), High Lava (2,894 acres; 30% contained), and Electric (500 acres; 0% contained).

Oregon
Oregon continues to manage extensive wildland fire activity under Northwest Area coordination.
The Big Grass fire southwest of Jordan Valley spans 578,637 acres (94% contained) with minimal creeping and smoldering. The Rowe Creek Complex south of Fossil stands at 373,927 acres (92% contained) with minimal smoldering under CIMT California Team 4.
The Grasshopper fire on the Mt. Hood National Forest has burned 93,953 acres (83% contained) with backing, creeping, and isolated torching, managed alongside the Austin fire (10,708 acres; 0% contained) and The Narrows fire (296 acres; 11% contained) by CIMT Great Basin Team 4. The Hagen fire (60,975 acres; 45% contained) and Paradise fire (9,329 acres; 15% contained) in the Umatilla National Forest exhibit moderate fire behavior with backing, creeping, and smoldering under CIMT Southern Area Team 3.
The Wrights Spring fire near Sprague River covers 55,134 acres (90% contained) under CIMT Northwest Team 7. The McCully fire northwest of Baker City spans 9,934 acres (2% contained) with active flanking, single tree torching, and spotting under CIMT Northwest Team 3. Other active fires include Egypt (4,553 acres; 82% contained) and Rosenbaum (483 acres; 100% contained).

California
Northern California and Southern California are both operating at Preparedness Level 3.
In Northern California, the S 1 Vya fire north of Vya spans 9,692 acres (53% contained) with minimal creeping and smoldering under CIMT California Team 2, which is also managing the MP18 fire (7,601 acres; 95% contained) north of Hoopa.
In Southern California, the Timber fire in the Los Padres National Forest southeast of Big Sur has burned 24,970 acres (21% contained) with active flanking, uphill runs, and single tree torching under CIMT California Team 3. The Plaskett fire southwest of Big Sur stands at 15,479 acres (1% contained) with active uphill runs, flanking, and single tree torching as CIMT California Team 7 mobilizes.

Idaho
Idaho coordinates active incidents across both the Great Basin and Northern Rockies geographic areas.
In southern Idaho, the Wildhorse fire north of Kimama covers 107,562 acres (95% contained) with minimal fire behavior. The Crooked fire on the Boise National Forest stands at 8,433 acres (21% contained) with active torching, flanking, and spotting under CIMT Great Basin Team 3. The Flint fire southwest of Nampa spans 6,763 acres (65% contained). Other southern Idaho incidents include the Coldwater fire (1,900 acres; 100% contained) and Doublesprings fire (1,779 acres; 35% contained).
In northern Idaho, the Moose Mountain fire covers 5,486 acres (8% contained) with active backing, flanking, and short-range spotting. The Upper Smith fire spans 4,701 acres (42% contained) with moderate single tree torching, flanking, and backing. Additional northern Idaho incidents include Silver (2,424 acres; 0% contained), Parker Lake (1,309 acres; 0% contained), Dudley (553 acres; 14% contained), Porcupine (180 acres; 0% contained), Cascade (6,800 acres; 50% contained), Wolf Creek (2,280 acres; 25% contained), Grotto (1,200 acres; 0% contained), and Three Links (760 acres; 0% contained).

Montana
The Northern Rockies Area is at Preparedness Level 3, tracking 21 uncontained large fires across the region.
The Sand Creek fire east of Wisdom spans 34,083 acres (13% contained) with minimal backing, creeping, and smoldering under CIMT Northern Rockies Team 1, which is also managing the Bobcat Lakes fire (10,784 acres; 45% contained), Moose fire (5,970 acres; 12% contained), and Skull fire (51 acres; 0% contained).
Other active fires across Montana include Silvertip (7,246 acres; 15% contained), Skillet (3,409 acres; 82% contained), Deer Creek (1,099 acres; 96% contained), Camp Creek (1,000 acres; 0% contained), Nature Grove (991 acres; 0% contained), Roe 2 (978 acres; 10% contained), and Cooper (176 acres; 0% contained).

Nevada
The Great Basin Area is at Preparedness Level 4, coordinating large incident suppression across Nevada.
The McConnell fire east of Orovada has grown to 32,568 acres (36% contained) with active flanking, backing, and uphill runs under CIMT Great Basin Team 6. The Calico fire southeast of McDermitt stands at 18,319 acres (25% contained) with minimal smoldering and isolated torching. The Blue Eagle fire northwest of Austin covers 9,218 acres (45% contained) with moderate smoldering, isolated torching, and creeping.
The Hawk fire north of Reno covers 15,085 acres (98% contained). The Forleen fire north of Wells stands at 667 acres (90% contained), and the Kearny fire north of Ely covers 300 acres (60% contained).

Utah
The Great Basin Area is managing active large incidents across Utah.
The Brushy Canyon fire north of Promontory has burned 10,002 acres (85% contained) with minimal smoldering. The Tom Creek fire south of Dugway covers 4,991 acres (80% contained) with creeping and backing.
The Slough Canyon fire east of Price spans 4,774 acres (34% contained) with minimal smoldering. The Black Canyon fire southwest of Price stands at 3,264 acres (90% contained), and the Teddy Valley fire covers 361 acres (100% contained).

Wyoming
Wyoming currently has no uncontained large wildfires reported. Isolated to scattered mixed wet and dry thunderstorms are expected across southern portions of the state today.

The Rocky Mountain Area is operating at Preparedness Level 2, managing four uncontained large fires.
The Aspen Acres fire in Custer County southwest of Pueblo stands at 102,004 acres (82% contained) with minimal fire behavior. The Gold Mountain fire north of Ouray covers 39,744 acres (92% contained). The Willow fire near Leadville stands at 7,534 acres (80% contained), and the Elk fire northwest of Lake City covers 7,257 acres (66% contained).

The Southwest Area is coordinating seven uncontained large fires in New Mexico.
The Frijoles fire in the Santa Fe National Forest east of Cundiyo spans 15,367 acres (59% contained) under CIMT Southwest Team 4 with backing, creeping, and smoldering. The new 4V fire northwest of Tucumcari covers 1,000 acres (50% contained) with moderate wind-driven runs. Additional incidents include the Whiskey fire northwest of Mountainair (351 acres; 0% contained), Sunset fire southwest of Arabela (145 acres; 62% contained), and Mogote Ridge fire east of Canjilon (112 acres; 40% contained).

The Ross fire west of Palo Pinto has burned 85,303 acres (31% contained) with active running, isolated torching, and flanking. The McKee Draw fire northwest of Rocksprings covers 3,444 acres (65% contained) with moderate backing and flanking. Other active Texas fires include the Sandy fire northwest of Raymondville (1,500 acres; 40% contained), the West Fork fire southwest of Junction (925 acres; 80% contained), and the Whitetail fire (494 acres; 100% contained).

The new Alexander Trail fire west of Nashoba covers 1,400 acres (10% contained) with active spotting, running, and torching. The Bison fire south of Elgin stands at 889 acres (85% contained). The new Wright fire southwest of Dustin spans 600 acres (70% contained) with extreme fire behavior and spotting. The new Railroad South fire east of Indiahoma covers 500 acres (0% contained) with extreme wind-driven runs, running, and spotting. Additional incidents include High Fence (250 acres; 90% contained), Brushy Creek (238 acres; 90% contained), South Beaver Mt (108 acres; 90% contained), and Wildhorse Creek (106 acres; 70% contained).

The Eastern Area is operating at Preparedness Level 2, with three uncontained large fires managed under NIMO Team 1 in the Superior National Forest.
The Bear Trap fire north of Ely spans 30,804 acres (92% contained). The Thumb fire south of Lac la Croix covers 25,015 acres (59% contained), and the Sioux fire northwest of Ely stands at 6,833 acres (94% contained). All three incidents continue to exhibit minimal fire behavior with smoldering.
