Anthropic in Talks to Lease $10B in Compute From Meta — Two-Year Deal Would Add Third Major Infrastructure Partner
Meta Platforms is in preliminary talks with Anthropic to lease computing power in a deal worth up to $10 billion over two years, confirmed by Reuters on July 17 and expanded by the New York Times on July 18. Anthropic would pay in monthly installments with an early-exit clause available to either party. The proposal originated from Anthropic in June. The deal would give Meta a direct entry into cloud computing, competing with CoreWeave and Nebius, while helping Anthropic bypass Nvidia chip shortages constraining its most advanced models. Neither company has confirmed the talks. The Meta deal, if completed, would be roughly a third the size of Anthropic's $30 billion compute agreement with SpaceX's Colossus 1 data center signed in May, and would add to existing infrastructure arrangements with Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud.

Fable 5 Moves to Permanent Paid Tier Today — Max and Team Premium Keep 50% Access, Pro Shifts to Usage Credits
Starting today, July 20, Anthropic ends the promotional free-access window for Claude Fable 5 that has been extended three times since July 7. Fable 5 is now permanently included in Max and Team Premium plans at up to 50% of weekly usage limits. Pro and Team Standard subscribers move to metered usage credits; a one-time $100 credit was issued to affected accounts. Anthropic's explanation for the repeated extensions was that demand for Fable 5 has been challenging to predict — a signal the company is still calibrating how much compute the model requires at scale. The 50% weekly Claude Code rate-limit increase, which ran alongside the promotional window, continues through August 19 for Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise users.
