Security researchers at Accomplish AI disclosed a sandbox escape chain, dubbed SharedRoot, that allows untrusted content inside a Claude Cowork local session to break out of its Linux VM and read or write files anywhere on the host Mac — including SSH keys and cloud credentials — with a single message and no permission prompt. The exploit chains CVE-2026-46331 (pedit COW) through an unprivileged user namespace to reach guest-root and then walks the fully mounted host filesystem. Anthropic closed the report as informative without shipping a fix, noting the latest Cowork version defaults to cloud execution, which sidesteps the local escape path; roughly 500,000 macOS users running local sessions were exposed before that mitigation.
